Sinus Lifting (Sinus Augmentation)

Sinus lifting, also called sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure used to increase the amount of bone in the upper back jaw so that dental implants can be placed more safely. The maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces above your upper teeth; if the bone between the mouth and the sinus is too thin, implants may not be stable enough. During a sinus lift, the sinus membrane is gently raised, and bone graft material is added underneath to build up the height of the jawbone. This treatment is considered when you have lost upper back teeth, the sinus has expanded over time, or previous bone loss has occurred. On this page, you will learn when sinus augmentation is needed, who is suitable for it, how the procedure is planned and performed, what recovery involves, and how long you may need to stay in Antalya when having sinus lift surgery combined with dental implant treatment.

What Is Sinus Lifting and Why Is It Done?

Sinus lifting is a type of bone grafting procedure that aims to increase bone height in the upper jaw, just below the maxillary sinus, to prepare the area for dental implants. The maxillary sinus is a hollow space in the cheek area; over time, especially after tooth loss, it can enlarge and the remaining bone between the mouth and sinus can become too thin to support implants safely.

During sinus augmentation, the dentist or oral surgeon creates an access window in the upper jawbone, carefully lifts the thin sinus membrane lining the cavity, and places bone graft material underneath this membrane. This added material acts as a scaffold, allowing your own body to form new bone in the area over several months.

Sinus lifting is done mainly for patients who are missing one or more upper back teeth and do not have enough bone height for dental implant placement. There are several reasons this problem develops:

  • Long-term tooth loss: After a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone gradually shrinks, a process called bone resorption.
  • Natural sinus enlargement: Sinuses can slowly expand with age, moving closer to the roots of the teeth.
  • Periodontal disease: Gum disease and bone loss around teeth can reduce bone volume, especially in the upper jaw.
  • Trauma or previous surgery: Injuries or past operations can leave the bone thin or irregular.

By increasing bone height, sinus lift surgery allows standard-length implants to be placed in areas that would otherwise be unsuitable. In some cases, implants can be inserted at the same time as the sinus lift; in others, the dentist waits several months for the bone to mature. Without this procedure, you might be limited to alternative options, such as shorter implants or removable dentures, which may not offer the same level of stability as well-planned implant-supported restorations.

When Is Sinus Augmentation Needed Before Dental Implants?

Sinus augmentation is needed before dental implants when the bone in the upper back jaw is not high or dense enough to hold implants securely and safely. The decision is based on a clinical examination and imaging, which show how close your sinus cavity is to the planned implant sites.

There are several common situations where a sinus lift is usually considered:

  • Low bone height in the molar and premolar area: If the bone from the gum surface to the sinus floor is too thin, standard implants may risk entering the sinus cavity or failing due to poor support.
  • Missing upper back teeth for a long time: When teeth are absent for years, the jawbone shrinks and the sinus often extends downward, leaving only a few millimetres of bone.
  • Advanced gum disease history: Periodontitis (a deep infection of the supporting tissues) can destroy bone around tooth roots, especially in the upper jaw, leading to a need for bone augmentation.
  • Previous failed implants or extractions: If previous treatments caused bone loss or left defects in the sinus floor area, a sinus lift may be recommended before placing new implants.

Imaging such as panoramic X-rays and 3D cone beam CT scans allows the dentist to measure bone height precisely. For example, if there is only a small deficit in bone height, a minor “internal” sinus lift might be done at the same time as implant placement. If bone is very thin, a more extensive “lateral window” sinus lift and a separate healing period before implant insertion are usually needed.

Sinus augmentation is not automatically required for every upper implant. If there is enough natural bone or if shorter or angled implants are appropriate, your dentist may suggest alternative approaches. The choice depends on your sinus anatomy, remaining bone, general health, chewing needs and long-term treatment goals.

Everything You Need to Know

More about Sinus Lifting (Sinus Augmentation)

Who Is a Good Candidate for Sinus Lifting?

A good candidate for sinus lifting is usually a person who wants fixed replacement teeth in the upper back jaw but does not have enough bone height under the sinus to support dental implants reliably. The evaluation combines your medical history, oral health and detailed imaging.

You may be considered suitable for sinus augmentation if several of the following apply:

  • Missing one or more upper premolars or molars: Especially if these teeth have been absent for a long period.
  • Insufficient bone height: X-rays and 3D scans show that the bone is too thin to place implants without entering or pressing on the sinus cavity.
  • Healthy or treatable gums: Any gum disease can either be mild or manageable so the tissues can heal properly after surgery.
  • Overall good health: Medical conditions are stable and under control, allowing normal wound healing.
  • Non-smoker or willing to reduce/quit: Smoking negatively affects blood supply and healing, so stopping or reducing is strongly recommended.
  • Commitment to oral hygiene: You are ready to maintain daily brushing, interdental cleaning and attend regular check-ups.

Age alone is usually not a strict barrier as long as healing is expected to be normal. For example, an older adult with well-controlled general health and good oral hygiene may be an excellent candidate, while a younger person with uncontrolled systemic disease might not.

Your dentist will also consider your expectations. Sinus lifting adds time and extra healing to the implant process. Healing of the grafted area typically takes several months before final teeth can be placed, especially if implants are not inserted on the same day. People who understand this timeline and are comfortable with a staged approach generally cope better with the treatment process.

Ultimately, candidacy is decided individually after a full examination and discussion of alternatives. Some patients may achieve stable results with shorter implants, angled implants or other prosthetic solutions without needing a sinus lift, depending on the specifics of their jawbone and sinus anatomy.

Who May Need to Postpone or Avoid Sinus Lift Surgery?

Some people may need to postpone or avoid sinus lift surgery because their general health, sinus condition or oral situation increases the risk of complications or poor healing. The dentist or surgeon will carefully review your medical and dental history before advising you.

Sinus augmentation may be delayed or considered unsuitable in situations such as:

  • Uncontrolled systemic diseases: Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or significant immune system problems can impair healing and increase infection risk. Treatment is usually postponed until these are better controlled by your physician.
  • Current sinus or upper respiratory infection: Active sinusitis, nasal congestion or severe allergies should be treated first, as surgery near an infected sinus can worsen symptoms and affect healing.
  • Heavy smoking: Smoking greatly reduces blood flow to oral tissues. Dentists may advise stopping or significantly reducing smoking before and after surgery, or may recommend alternative treatments if you cannot change this habit.
  • Recent radiotherapy to the head and neck: Previous high-dose radiation to the jaw area can affect bone’s ability to heal; careful evaluation with your medical team is needed, and sinus lifting may be considered high-risk.
  • Certain blood disorders or use of blood thinners: These can increase bleeding risk. The dentist collaborates with your physician to decide whether adjustments are possible or whether surgery should be avoided.
  • Severe periodontal disease or poor oral hygiene: Active gum infection, heavy plaque and tartar or untreated decay can spread bacteria to the graft site. These issues should be managed first.

Pregnancy is another time when elective oral surgeries, including sinus lifts, are often postponed unless urgently needed. The aim is to avoid unnecessary stress, medications and long appointments during this period.

In some people, sinus anatomy, such as very thin or fragile sinus membranes, large sinus cysts or polyps, may make the procedure more complex. Ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist input might be requested before deciding on surgery. If risks are considered too high, alternatives such as shorter implants, tilted implants in different bone areas, or non-implant options like dental bridges or removable dentures may be suggested.

The decision to postpone or avoid sinus lift surgery is made individually, weighing the potential benefits against the medical, anatomical and personal factors involved.

How Is Sinus Lifting Planned With X-Rays and 3D Scans?

Sinus lifting is planned with X-rays and 3D scans to precisely measure your available bone, map the shape of your sinuses and reduce the risk of complications during surgery. This imaging step is essential because the sinus membrane is thin and the area contains important structures such as nearby tooth roots and blood vessels.

The planning process usually includes several stages:

  • Clinical examination: The dentist examines your mouth, checks gum health, evaluates bite (occlusion) and notes any tenderness in the sinus area.
  • Panoramic X-ray (OPG): This gives an overall view of upper and lower jaws, tooth positions, sinus boundaries and any visible bone defects. It is often the first imaging tool.
  • 3D cone beam CT scan (CBCT): This scan produces a three-dimensional image of your jaw and sinuses, allowing accurate measurement of bone height and width and detailed evaluation of the sinus floor.

With these images, the dentist can:

  • Measure how much bone height is missing in the planned implant area.
  • Assess the thickness and contour of the sinus floor.
  • Identify sinus features such as septa (bony walls), cysts, polyps or thickened membranes.
  • Determine whether an internal (crestal) or lateral window sinus lift technique is more appropriate.
  • Plan the number, length and angle of future implants.

Digital planning software may be used with CBCT data to virtually place implants and design a surgical guide. This guide, if used, can help position the access window and implants more accurately according to the pre-planned design.

Planning also includes evaluation of your general health, medications and sinus history. If the scan shows signs of existing sinus disease, an ENT specialist referral may be recommended before performing the sinus lift.

This careful imaging-based planning aims to minimise risks such as sinus membrane perforation, inadequate graft volume, or implant placement into unfavourable positions. It also helps estimate whether implants can be placed at the same time as the sinus lift or need to wait until the graft has matured.

How Does the Sinus Lift Procedure Work Step by Step?

The sinus lift procedure works by creating space under the maxillary sinus membrane and filling it with bone graft material so that new bone can form and support dental implants. The exact technique may vary, but the general steps are similar.

For a typical “lateral window” sinus lift, often used when bone height is very limited, the procedure usually involves:

  1. Preparation and anesthesia: Your mouth is cleaned, and local anesthesia is applied to numb the upper back jaw. Sedation may be offered in some cases to help you relax.
  2. Accessing the jawbone: A small incision is made in the gum tissue above the missing teeth area, and the gum is gently lifted to expose the outer wall of the maxillary bone.
  3. Creating a bony window: The dentist creates a small window in the bone to reach the sinus membrane. This step is done carefully to avoid tearing the membrane.
  4. Lifting the sinus membrane: The thin membrane lining the sinus cavity is gently detached and pushed upwards, creating a space between the membrane and the floor of the sinus.
  5. Placing the bone graft: Bone graft material is packed into the created space. The type of graft and exact amount are chosen based on your specific needs and the planned implant positions.
  6. Closing the window and gums: The bony window may be covered with a membrane, and the gum tissue is repositioned and sutured (stitched) to protect the graft.

In some cases, when the existing bone is slightly short but not extremely thin, an “internal” or “crestal” sinus lift can be performed through the implant site itself, using special instruments to gently push up the sinus floor and place graft material. This approach is usually less extensive and is commonly done at the same time as implant placement.

At the end of the procedure, instructions are given about oral hygiene, medications prescribed by the dentist or physician, and precautions to protect the surgical site, such as avoiding blowing your nose forcefully or creating strong pressure in the sinus area.

The newly grafted area needs time to integrate with your own bone. Over several months, your body replaces part of the graft with living bone, gradually providing a more solid foundation for future or already placed implants.

How Long Does Sinus Lifting Take and How Many Visits Are Needed?

Sinus lifting usually takes between 45 minutes and 2 hours per side, depending on the complexity of the case, and typically requires several visits from initial consultation to final implant restoration. The exact number of appointments varies with your bone condition, whether implants are placed at the same time, and your healing response.

A common treatment timeline may include:

  • Initial consultation visit: Examination, discussion of goals, review of medical history, and initial X-rays.
  • Imaging and planning visit: A 3D cone beam CT scan is taken, and a detailed plan is prepared. Sometimes this is done at the same visit as the consultation.
  • Surgery visit: The sinus lift (and possibly implant placement) is performed under local anesthesia, with or without sedation.
  • Early follow-up: Typically within 7–10 days, the dentist checks healing and removes sutures if needed.
  • Healing period visits: Interim check-ups may occur over the next few months to monitor healing.
  • Implant placement visit (if delayed): If implants were not placed during the sinus lift, they are usually inserted after a healing period, often in the range of 4–9 months, depending on the graft and individual healing.
  • Restoration visits: After implants have integrated with bone (osseointegration), impressions and bite records are taken for your crowns or bridge, followed by a fitting appointment.

The overall treatment duration from sinus lift to final implant crowns can range from around 4–12 months, depending on whether implants are placed immediately or in a second stage. If there is enough existing bone to stabilise implants, the dentist may choose to place them at the same time as the sinus augmentation, which can shorten the total treatment time.

Healing periods cannot be rushed, as bone formation and implant integration need adequate time. For example, a patient with stronger bone and excellent oral hygiene may progress slightly quicker, while someone with slower healing due to general health factors may need more months before loading implants with chewing forces.

The dentist will outline your expected timeline after imaging and planning, and this schedule may be adjusted based on how your body responds at each stage.

Does Sinus Lift Surgery Hurt and What Type of Anesthesia Is Used?

Sinus lift surgery is usually carried out under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure itself, although you may feel pressure, vibration or stretching sensations. Discomfort afterwards is typically managed with pain relief recommended by the dentist or physician and with home-care measures.

The main anesthesia options include:

  • Local anesthesia: Numbs only the surgical area in the upper jaw. You remain fully awake but should not feel sharp pain. This is the most common choice.
  • Local anesthesia with sedation: A sedative is given to help you feel more relaxed or drowsy while still using local anesthesia for pain control. Sedation is considered for very anxious patients or longer procedures.
  • General anesthesia: Only rarely used in dental settings for sinus lifts, generally reserved for specific medical indications or combined extensive procedures and done in appropriate facilities.

During the surgery, many patients mainly notice sounds and a sense of pressure rather than pain. The dentist checks your comfort frequently and can give extra local anesthesia if needed.

After the anesthesia wears off, mild to moderate soreness, swelling and a feeling of fullness in the cheek or under the eye are common for a few days. Some patients notice slight bruising in the cheek area. Pain and swelling usually peak within 48–72 hours and then gradually improve.

Post-operative discomfort is usually controlled by:

  • Pain-relief medication prescribed or recommended by the dentist.
  • Cold compresses on the cheek for short intervals during the first day.
  • Sleeping with the head slightly elevated to reduce swelling.

If you experience severe pain that does not improve with prescribed measures, heavy bleeding, facial swelling that rapidly increases, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, you should contact a dentist or seek urgent medical care. Such symptoms can indicate complications that need prompt attention.

Before surgery, the dentist will discuss which type of anesthesia is appropriate based on your anxiety level, medical history, and the expected length and complexity of the procedure.

What Is Recovery Like After Sinus Augmentation?

Recovery after sinus augmentation usually involves a few days of discomfort and swelling followed by gradual improvement over 1–2 weeks, while deeper bone healing continues silently for several months. Most patients can return to light daily activities within a day or two, following the dentist’s instructions.

In the first 24–72 hours, it is common to experience:

  • Mild to moderate pain or tenderness in the surgical area.
  • Swelling of the cheek and possibly under the eye on the operated side.
  • Slight oozing of blood or pinkish saliva from the mouth.
  • A feeling of nasal congestion or fullness in the sinus region.

To support healing and comfort during this period, dentists usually recommend:

  • Using pain-relief and, if prescribed, other medications exactly as directed.
  • Applying cold compresses on the cheek intermittently for the first day.
  • Keeping the head elevated, even while sleeping, to reduce swelling.
  • Avoiding blowing your nose forcefully for a period advised by the dentist.
  • Refraining from sneezing with the mouth closed; if you must sneeze, keep the mouth open to reduce sinus pressure.

Gentle mouth rinsing may be suggested after the first 24 hours, while vigorous swishing should be avoided until healing has progressed. Brushing should continue, carefully avoiding direct trauma to the surgical site.

Stitches are often removed or checked about 7–10 days after surgery. Many people find their day-to-day comfort acceptable by this time, though a small degree of internal fullness or sensitivity may persist for longer.

Bone graft integration and new bone formation take significantly more time than soft tissue healing. Depending on the graft type, your general health and the extent of the lift, the deeper healing phase may range from around 4–9 months before implants can be fully loaded with chewing forces.

During this period, regular check-ups are important. If implants have not yet been placed, the dentist may take follow-up X-rays to assess the grafted area before the implant phase. If you notice persistent or increasing pain, nasal discharge with an unpleasant smell, or any sign of infection, contacting your dentist promptly is advised.

What Can I Eat After a Sinus Lift?

After a sinus lift, you should eat soft, cool or lukewarm foods that require minimal chewing, especially on the operated side, while avoiding anything that could disturb the surgical area or increase sinus pressure. Your diet can gradually return to normal as healing progresses and the dentist confirms that the tissues are stable.

During the first days, recommended choices typically include:

  • Soft foods: Yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, well-cooked pasta, soups at a comfortable temperature, smoothies without seeds, and soft fish.
  • Blended or pureed meals: Vegetable or fruit purees, blended soups and porridge can provide nutrition with little chewing.
  • Plenty of fluids: Water and non-acidic drinks help maintain hydration, but drinking through a straw is often discouraged to avoid suction near the surgical site.

Foods and habits to avoid, especially early on, generally include:

  • Very hot food or drinks that can increase bleeding and discomfort.
  • Hard, crunchy or sticky foods such as nuts, crisps, hard bread crusts or chewing gum that may traumatise the area.
  • Spicy, acidic or very salty foods if they irritate your mouth.
  • Using straws, vigorous sucking or spitting, which may disturb the graft or clot.

As tenderness and swelling reduce, you can slowly reintroduce firmer foods, usually after several days, but it is wise to keep chewing away from the surgical area for as long as your dentist advises. For example, you might eat on the opposite side of the mouth while the graft heals.

If you are wearing a temporary denture or partial prosthesis, the dentist may adjust it or advise limited use at the beginning to prevent excess pressure on the grafted zone.

Your nutritional intake during recovery is important. A balanced diet with enough protein, vitamins and minerals supports the body’s natural healing processes. If you have special dietary needs or medical conditions, discussing suitable meal options with your dentist or physician can be helpful.

What Are the Risks and Possible Complications of Sinus Lifting?

Sinus lifting is a well-established procedure, but like all surgeries, it carries risks and possible complications. Most patients heal without serious problems, yet it is important to understand these possibilities before deciding on treatment.

Potential risks and complications include:

  • Sinus membrane perforation: The thin lining of the sinus may tear during the procedure. Small tears are often repaired or may heal on their own, but larger ones can require modifying or postponing the surgery.
  • Infection: Infection can develop in the grafted area or sinus. This may cause pain, swelling, nasal discharge or fever and needs prompt dental or medical attention and treatment decided by a professional.
  • Bleeding or bruising: Some bleeding is normal, but excessive or prolonged bleeding is less common and may need further evaluation.
  • Swelling and discomfort: These are expected short-term effects but usually improve within a few days. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be checked.
  • Graft failure or resorption: The placed bone graft may not integrate as expected, or some of it may be resorbed by the body, leaving less bone than planned and sometimes requiring additional grafting.
  • Sinusitis or sinus congestion: Inflammation or infection of the sinus can occur, causing pressure, pain or nasal symptoms.
  • Implant-related problems: If implants are placed at the same time and later lose support, they may need to be removed or replaced.

Serious complications such as spread of infection or communication (opening) between mouth and sinus that does not close properly are uncommon but can occur and sometimes require additional procedures.

Your own risk profile depends on several factors: general health, smoking, control of systemic diseases, sinus health, oral hygiene and following post-operative instructions. For example, someone with well-controlled health conditions and good hygiene who avoids nose blowing and heavy physical strain as advised reduces the chance of problems.

Alternative treatments may be suggested if your risk is considered higher, such as shorter implants, angled implants placed in different bone regions, or prosthetic options like dental crowns or bridges supported by existing teeth. The dentist will discuss these alongside the benefits and risks of sinus augmentation so you can make an informed decision.

How Long Should You Stay in Antalya for Sinus Lift Treatment?

For sinus lift treatment in Antalya, you should usually plan to stay at least 5–10 days around the surgery appointment, with the understanding that later visits for implants and final teeth will require additional trips or a longer overall stay. The ideal length of stay depends on your treatment plan, healing, and any combined procedures such as implant placement.

A typical arrangement for an international patient might look like this:

  • Pre-arrival planning: Before you travel, you may share dental records, photos and scans for an initial remote assessment. At Umut Dental Clinic Antalya, patients can share their details and X-rays for an online consultation before planning travel.
  • First days in Antalya: Clinical examination, updated imaging such as a panoramic X-ray or 3D scan, and final treatment planning are completed, often within 1–2 days.
  • Surgery day: The sinus lift, with or without immediate implant placement, is carried out.
  • Early follow-up: A review appointment, usually within a few days, allows the dentist to check healing, adjust instructions and address any concerns before you return home.

If stitches are non-dissolving and need removal, this is often scheduled about 7–10 days after surgery. Some patients prefer to remain in Antalya until this visit; others may arrange follow-up care with a local dentist at home if agreed upon in advance.

For the second stage—implant placement if not done at the same time, and later the final crowns or bridges—you will need to return after the graft has healed, often after several months. The required stay for these phases is usually shorter, as surgery is less extensive than the initial sinus lift.

Because each case is different, it is important to receive a personalised schedule outlining expected appointments and recommended time in the city. This helps with arranging flights, accommodation and time away from work while allowing enough flexibility for healing and safe follow-up care.
